Trip to Romania

Flying solo for the first time to a country none of my family had ever been to was thrilling. Not knowing the language, or having any accommodation perhaps less so but I was assured my good friend was to pick me up on arrival.

My experience started the moment I stepped on the plane, with perhaps the rest of the passengers fluent in Romanian, everything from the PA to the newspapers was in a language foreign to me, making the trip all the more adventurous. Everything went smoothly as I was picked up on arrival and travelled to the Capital, Bucharest. As ever I was fortunate with my friend fluent in the language and transportation, activities and most importantly eating was not a problem.

I was introduced to foods I shall never forget; from hearty sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls) with sour cream, fried mici (beef/pork meat balls), stuffed mushrooms with pickles and tomatoes and even ciorbă de burtă. The only thing I had to be wary of in terms of food was mămăligă, traditional food which can be compared to a corn alternative to mashed potato, as I had been advised by my allergist to avoid all forms of maize.

The food was amazing and affordable , the people warm and approachable and the weather amazing. This made for an exceptional trip incorporating beach, mountain and city travel.
