Visiting Rimini

Rimini, a seaside resort town with beaches stretching for 9 miles along the Adriatic sea. If you are planning to visit San Marino, it is very likely you will pass through this town. There are also reliable train links to Bologna, Ancona and Milan (Rail connections to Rome, Florence and Venice are possible by transferring at Bologna).

In terms of communication, the levels of English speakers is somewhat lower than that of Rome. Saying that, if there is a communication problem, people are generally happy to find an intermediary to be able to help. With this level of friendliness, communicating allergy concerns in a restaurant or hotel was not a problem.

As can be expected from a resort town there are plenty of accommodation and restaurant options, many of which provides views of the Adriatic Sea. With regards to the cuisine, there are a wide range of pizza, pasta and flour based products, therefore those travelling with a wheat allergy may have more difficulty locating a suitable restaurant. However it is noted that there are also many seafood and fish restaurants available.

Of the restaurants visited, Il Giardino, on the roadside next to the beach, deserves a special mention. This seemed to be where the locals gather, and within minutes of ordering a dish, tables were filled with locals enjoying the evening with a drink. In terms of food this restaurant offered street food options such as Piadinas, a type of flatbread with various different fillings. The waiters brought over an English menu and were happy to talk over any allergy concerns.

If leaving the city by train, there are a few food options close to the station: a decent cafeteria, Otto E Mezzo, where you can grab a grilled sandwich and a cappuccino,  or a Burger King for those craving fast food.

In summary, Travelling with Allergies in Rimini was only slightly more difficult than in Rome, which owing to the high levels of tourism there is a ubiquitous understanding of English. As English is not as widely spoken in Rimini, it can take a little longer to convey allergy concerns. This of course can be part alleviated by learning some allergy related phrases in Italian. Additionally, street food and snacks are commonly wheat based, so it may be wise to carry snacks if suffering from a wheat allergy. All being said, RImini is a lovely town to relax and catch a break on the beach along the Adriatic Sea.
